David Bowie, Heroes, Isolar II
In this project we explore microaesthetics in creating individual design elements, and then combining them in macro aesthetics into a cohesive design expressing meaning, rhythm, balance, and harmony.

In the first exercise (1a) points, lines and planes are used separately to represent different portions of a piece of music, in this case David Bowie’s Heroes. Size suggests importance and volume; regular placement implies rhythm; and irregular placement creates tension and dynamic forms.

In the second part of this exercise (1b), one of each point, line, and plane are combined, and attention is given to hierarchy, spatial relationships, and movement.

Word forms are explored in exercise 2, with the artist, song title, and the name of the tour. Hierarchy is explored with font, size, weight, placement, texture, rhythm, and isolation, while reflecting the mood of the artist and song.

In exercise 3, key words (king and queen, drinking, dolphins, Berlin wall, kissing Berlin Wall) are used to find five images that reflect the song. The images are manipulated using filters and effects such as saturation, contrast, and artistic effects, to heighten the mood and meaning of them.

Exercise 4 brings it all together. Combining one of each of the point, line, plane, word treatment, manipulated photo, and a color palate made in Adobe CC from the manipulated photos, we create two final posters. The final posters convey balance, proportion, movement, rhythm, dominance, direction, unity, and readability, while representing the mood and message of the song.
